Williams: Lee is MLB’s best, Mets should deal Reyes

MLB Network analyst Mitch Williams joined the show to talk about the big stories in baseball.

Dan asked Williams who is the best pitcher in baseball. “Right now it’s Cliff Lee,” Williams said. “He’s finally accepted the fact that in his case, walks won’t kill him.”

Williams explained that Lee is now willing to go outside the strike zone. His walks are up, but the batting average against is down. “I think he was so concerned about walking people and loved the fact that no one walked fewer guys than he did,” Williams said.

Williams also weighed in on the trade deadline at the end of July. He said that the Padres will move either Heath Bell or Mike Adams. And he thinks the Mets will deal Jose Reyes … most likely to San Francisco for a young arm.

Williams had a lot of praise for Milwaukee Brewers first baseman Prince Fielder. He’d give Fielder a seven-year deal before he’d give Albert Pujols a long-term contract. He thinks that Fielder is an underrated athlete. He’s playing first base well and should continue to produce.

Williams commented on Derek Jeter as well. He thinks he’ll continue to play shortstop for the Yankees for a long time to come. Williams said even if he’s losing quickness, he’ll make up for it with wisdom and position himself well.
