Paulie’s review of new Shake Shack
By Paul Pabst (@paulpabst on Twitter)
There is a relatively new burger/shakes/hot dog chain on the east coast called Shake Shack. There is a lot of buzz around it and I heard that lines are long at lunch and dinner. I expect this chain to head to the Midwest and West over the next few years.
I checked out the new store in Westport, Ct., on Thursday night. Here we go:
Shack Burger: Good size without being gargantuan and unmanageable. If it’s not enough, you can get the double. The bun is exceptional. Its soft, but not doughy or undercooked. The meat was hot and juicy, with just enough real grill taste without being too greasy. The lettuce, tomato, onion and pickle were very fresh and the pickles had great crispness.
Shack-cago Dog: This is their take on the classic Chicago dog. Its loaded up with pickle, peppers, celery salt, mustard, tomato, relish and onions. As a Chicagoan, I’ve tasted a lot of bad versions of the Chicago Dog and this was well above average. If they could somehow add a poppy seed bun, they would take it to the next level. We can always hope.
Fries: I must admit that I’m anti-crinkle cut fries. Not a fan. So my review of Shake Shack fries is skewed. They tasted great and you can go with the cheese fries option if you want.
I’m almost ashamed to admit that I was too full to try the Concretes (frozen custard) or Shakes. Next time, I promise.
