Mike Holmgren on Manning injury, drafting McCoy, new kickoff rule

Cleveland Browns GM Mike Holmgren joined the show to talk about the upcoming season.

Holmgren commented on Peyton Manning’s injury. The Browns face the Colts in Week 2. Holmgren said the first thing he felt was concern for Manning. Second was a bit of relief, because they play them.

“I expect to see the same offense,” Holmgren said. “It’s up to Kerry Collins to learn it. He’s a veteran and he’ll learn it.” Holmgren said Manning never made any mistakes, so he’s hoping maybe Collins will make one or two.

Holmgren looked back on taking Colt McCoy in the third round of the 2010 draft. “I didn’t expect him to be there,” Holmgren said. “When he was there, he was an easy pick for us because he was high on our board.”

Holmgren said that he was against the kickoff rule. He gave a speech at the owners meeting … and convinced about four people to change their mind. Holmgren thought that it was a reaction to a small sample of concussions. “I thought there was another way to do it,” Holmgren said.

Holmgren also looked back on coaching in Green Bay. He loved the college atmosphere. “I felt responsible for the mood of the community,” Holmgren said. “That can weigh on you.”
