John Smoltz: Phillies hurt by playing five-game series

TBS and MLB Network analyst John Smoltz joined the show to talk about the playoffs and more.

Smoltz said that one of the reasons the Phillies might have lost is that it was a five-game series. He thinks that the Phillies have the deepest rotation, but you don’t go deep into rotation in a five-game series. Smoltz said that the pressure got to the Phillies as well.

Smoltz talked about the Chicago White Sox hiring Robin Ventura. Smoltz didn’t see it coming. “It’s tough for players who were real good to be managers,” Smoltz said. Interestingly, Smoltz said that his former teammate Greg Maddux would be able to manage.

Smoltz weighed in on Terry Francona. He thinks a team with an opening should head in that direction. “He would be the guy that I would go after,” Smoltz said. “Terry is not for long for some job. Terry’s got a lot of years still in front of him.”
