Jerome Bettis: Chris Johnson struggling because he wasn’t in training camp

Jerome Bettis joined the show to weigh in on the big stories around the NFL. Here are some of his takes:

— Bettis thinks Chris Johnson is struggling in Tennessee because he wasn’t in camp and doesn’t know what’s going on with the offense. “A running back needs to know his surroundings,” Bettis said. “It’s all about feel.”

Bettis said that running backs in this situation usually figure it out in the second half of the season.

— Bettis thinks that Peyton Hillis has no right to skip out on the Browns because he’s not happy with his contract. Bettis said you play and let the business take care of itself later. “You don’t come up with mystery injuries just to hold yourself out so you don’t risk injury,” Bettis said.

— Bettis thinks Bill Cowher is waiting for the perfect set-up before he comes back to the NFL. He’s not sure even a team that could draft Andrew Luck would be enough. “He wants an established quarterback so he doesn’t have to deal with that issue,” Cowher said.

— Bettis thinks Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers has taken a step back this season.   “Some of the decisions he’s making aren’t consistent with how he played in years past,” Bettis said. “I don’t know what it is. If he’s rushing things or not getting together over the summer.”

— Bettis weighed in on his alma mater, Notre Dame. He said the Irish would only join a conference for non-football sports. He said football is fine. “They may be between a rock and a hard place if the Big East falls apart,” Bettis said.

Bettis said if Notre Dame has to join a conference, the Big 10 makes the most sense.
