Bob Costas talks about horse racing allegations and instant replay in baseball

MLB Network host and NBC broadcaster Bob Costas joined the show to talk about interviewing I’ll Have Another trainer Doug O’Neill and the latest around baseball.

Costas talked about what I’ll Have Another trainer O’Neill was accused of. Basically O’Neill told him it was medicinal violations, not flat out juicing. But Costas noted he’s been accused of “Milkshaking,” a drink that helps reduce the horse’s lactic acid buildup. “That’s what earned him, at least in California, ‘Drug O’Neill,'” Costas said.

But Costas noted the whole sport is controversial. “Is he any worse than any other trainer?” Costas asked. “Maybe not. But he happens to be the trainer of a horse on the cusp of a Triple Crown.

Costas said that a Triple Crown would be huge for horse racing. “It will also give him as an individual, a chance to be a very prominent advocate for reform of the sport,” Costas said. “He’ll be in a position to be at the forefront of that and perhaps do some good.”

Costas weighed in on instant replay in baseball as well. He said that it’s not right you can review a home run in an 11-2 game in June, and you wouldn’t be able to review Don Denkinger’s famous mistake at first base in the 1985 World Series.
