Rowdy Gaines says he thinks Phelps could get bored and return
NBC swimming analyst Rowdy Gaines joined the show to talk about the Olymics and Michael Phelps.
Gaines said he wasn’t worried about Phelps when he came in fourth in the 400 IM because he didn’t train for that. Gaines said that Phelps came back and was himself in other events, and he didn’t consider him beating Ryan Lochte an upset.
“My guess is that in 2 1/2, three years he’s going to get bored,” Gaines said. “He’s a swimmer. That’s what he is.”
Gaines said that as long as he stays active, he’ll be OK. Gaines said he retired for six months and came back and he was OK.
Gaines said that he thinks that Lochte put the expectations on himself by saying it was “his time.” Gaines thinks the schedule was a “little more daunting than he thought.” And Gaines said he still won a lot, so it wasn’t a failure, just a bit of a disappointment.
