Don Mattingly says he likes 99 percent of umpires, weighs in on Melky Cabrera

Los Angeles Dodgers manager Don Mattingly joined the show to talk about being suspended for two games for an incident with an umpire.

Mattingly explained that he was suspended for not controlling his player Matt Kemp when he was arguing with an umpire.

Mattingly said he’s not really that out of control when he’s arguing, even though it may appear that way at time. “For the most part, you’re just fighting for your guys,” Mattingly said.

Mattingly said that he’s not against the umpires. “For me, 99% of them handle things well,” Mattingly said. “There are few you can’t talk with.”

Mattingly said the good umpires are the ones who listen. The umps who can’t handle it make the situation worse.

Mattingly weighed in on Melky Cabrera, who he used to coach in New York: “I love him. I think he works hard. I think he’s a good player. You hate to see this happen.”

Dan asked Mattingly about Kirk Gibosn’s comment the Giants should get penalized for what happened with Caberera. Mattingly said that he hasn’t thought it through, but agrees in principle that MLB may want to consider taking action against the team.
