Wojo: Coach K announcement didn’t affect decision
New Marquette coach Steve Wojciechowski joined the show to talk about why he left Duke for this job.
“I feel like Marquette is the perfect place,” Wojo said. “A school where basketball is part of the fabric of the university.”
Dan asked Wojciechowski if Coach K announcing he wanted to stay for five more years affected his decision. Wojciechowski said no.
“I’ve wanted to be a head coach for a long time,” Wojciechowski said. “But I tried to be patient and find the right fit.
Wojo said Coach K has been incredible supportive and raved about the Marquette program. “I was taken aback a little bit by how effusive [Coach K] was,” Wojciechowski said.
Wojo said that he was lucky to have such a great relationship with Coach K and that’s not the norm in today’s game.
Dan asked Wojo about doing the in-game interviews instead of Coach K. Wojo said he had a little problem with how invasive that could be. “What goes on [in the locker room] during the course of a game … to me, that’s sacred stuff,” Wojo said.
Wojo commented on Jabari Parker. He wouldn’t be surprised if he stayed at Duke (or if he went to the NBA either). “Jabari is a very unique guy,” Wojo said. “He comes from a wonderful family.”
