Geno Auriema on impact of one-and-done on college game
UConn coach Geno Auriema joined the show to talk about winning his 10th title last night. Here are some of his takes:
— Dan asked how one and done would affect women’s college basketball: “Women’s basketball had one and dones, certainly we wouldn’t be talking about 10 national championships.”
— Auriema on the problems with one and done in the men’s game: “The kids aren’t there as long as they need to be. There’s less of a continuity. They don’t know each other on the court. A coach becomes more of a manager, keeping things moving in the right direction. In terms of building, it becomes very difficult.”
— Dan asked Auriema if it’s a problem for the sport that the Huskies are too dominant. Geno said no one had a problem when the Celtics and Yankees or Tiger Woods were dominating. But he admitted blow-outs are a problem. “There are too many blowouts,” Auriema said. “And I’m not crazy about it. But there’s really nothing I can do about it right now.”
— Dan asked if his best teams could beat WNBA teams.”Probably the team in 2001 or 2002 … we ended up having four players make the Olympic team,” Auriema said. “That team would have made the playoffs in the WNBA.”
