Charles Barkley: Kenny Smith wouldn’t take Rockets job because it’s the Titanic
Charles Barkley commented on his TNT cohort Kenny Smith interviewing for the vacant Houston Rockets job …..
DP: If you’re a betting man, is Kenny Smith the next head coach of the Rockets?
CB: First of all, I don’t think he’s going to take that job. Nobody says I want to take on the Titanic, unless you’re [new Kings coach] Dave Joerger. I think Dave Joerger is a heck of a coach but to take over Sacramento … that’s just stupid. That’s a bad job. And Kenny [Smith] is not stupid. You never take a bad job … well Dave Joerger had to take the job because he didn’t have a job. But Kenny’s got a great job why would he take over the Houston Rockets. You don’t take a bad job when you got a good job. You only take a bad job when you don’t have a job.
DP: Who would you replace Kenny with?
CB: We got some great guys — Dennis Scott, Chris Webber ….those guys already work for us. We got Steve Smith. So those guys would be first in line. But obviously everyone thinks Kobe [Bryant]. Kobe’s got to find something to do. You can only car pool so much. That’s the toughest thing when you retire. Everybody says I’m not going to do anything. That works great for about three months, then you realize, Oh my God there’s nothing to do 24-7.
