Jackie Nicklaus on the 25th anniversary of his father winning Masters

Jackie Nicklaus joined the show to talk about his father winning the 1986 Masters and what it meant to the Nicklaus family.

Nicklaus said that coming into that tournament, his father had been struggling and people weren’t sure if he could win a big tournament again.

Nicklaus said that he had caddied about 15 times or so for his father, but that was his first time caddying for him at the Masters.

Nicklaus said he didn’t expect to hug his father after the win. “It will remain one of the most special moments of my lifetime,” Nicklaus said.

Nicklaus did admit that he had very little input into his father’s decisions. “I felt like my role was don’t do anything that would take my dad out of the moment,” Nicklaus said. He said his father made his own club decisions.

Nicklaus said he’s rooting for Tiger Woods to do well. He said his father taught him never to root against him. “If he does, he certainly will have deserved it,” Nickalus said. “If he does, my dad will be the first person there to congratulate him.”
