SI’s Staples explains Spurrier’s plans to pay college football players

SI.com’s Andy Staples joined the show to talk about South Carolina’s Steve Spurrier’s proposal to pay players out of his own pocket.

Staples explained that Spurrier could end up spending over $300K per year on his players. But the plan will never happen. For one thing, you’ll have discrepancies between big schools and small schools that will cause problems.

Staples also said this has something to do with South Carolina over-signing players and possibly trying to steer the argument away from that. Staples said that the Big Ten has had a rule since 1957 against that. He and Dan also pointed out that college football teams need to recruit better … not just more.

Staples had the latest on Terrelle Pryor on whether he’ll be able to play at Ohio State next season after missing his first five games. “We’re going to see how willing they are to fight for those last seven games,” Staples said.
