Joe Mauer says he’ll play first if team asks him

Minnesota Twins catcher Joe Mauer joined the show to talk about the season and more.

Dan asked Mauer about whether he’ll play first base. “I haven’t been asked to play there just yet, but I’ve been asked to take some ground balls and try to get comfortable over there,” Mauer said. “If it can help our team win, I’ll go out there and pitch. Gardy asked me to take some ground balls the other day. He’s my manager and that’s what I’m going to do.”

Mauer said he thinks he can help the team more by playing catcher, but he’d go to first if he had to. Still, he doesn’t want people to think that he won’t catch.

“The big perception up here is he’s taking ground balls he’s gonna be a first baseman full time,” Mauer said. “That’s not the case.”

Mauer commented on some fans booing in Minnesota. Mauer said that the Twins dug themselves a big hole early in the season and fans are disappointed in players not playing as well as they usually do.
