Paul O’Neill puts Derek Jeter’s 3,000th hit in perspective
Former Yankee and current YES broadcaster Paul O’Neill joined the show to talk about Derek Jeter’s 3,000th hit.
O’Neill was very happy that fan Christian Lopez gave Jeter the ball. “That ball means a lot to the player and I thought it was a great gesture,” O’Neill said.
O’Neill talked about when Jeter first arrived on the scene. He said he was so skinny at first, he wasn’t sure what kind of player he was going to be. But Jeter soon proved he was the real deal.
Dan asked O’Neill which owner he preferred, Marge Schott or George Steinbrenner. He said he had respect for both of them.
“George Steinbrenner … I cannot say a bad thing about him,” O’Neill said. O’Neill said that Steinbrenner wanted to win as bad as the players and that meant a lot.
Dan asked O’Neill who’s on his Yankees Mt. Rushmore. O’Neill said that he has Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig for sure. And he thinks Jeter belongs there because he’s the club’s all-time hit leader. Then Mickey Mantle over Joe DiMaggio.
“I’m gonna buy another mountain and put some more faces,” O’Neill said.
