Williams: Pirates should buy; Phils, Giants need ‘thump’

MLB Network analyst Mitch Williams joined the show to talk about the trade deadline and more.

— Williams said that the Pittsburgh should go for it and trade for more talent. He said the NL Central is wide open. Williams thought the Brewers were the team to win the division earlier, but they haven’t stepped up.

— Williams said that he expects a “dogfight” between Philly and Atlanta for Carlos Beltran. “The fact that Ryan Howard has 75 RBIs right now is a testament to pitchers’ ignorance,” Williams said. “Pitcher continue to pitch to Howard because they think they can strike him out.”

— Williams said that the Cubs made a mistake last year that is causing their issue now. “When they didn’t sign Ryne Sandberg for that [managing] job, they missed the boat completely,” Williams said. “You bring in a manager to manage in the big league’s and they don’t have a bubble gum card, they don’t respect [them],” Williams said.

— Williams think that the Giants need to add “some thump” somewhere in the lineup.

— Williams thinks that the Yankees will go hard after Felix Hernandez. He said the Mariners will shop anyone other than Ichiro.
