Philip Rivers talks about the most important quality for a quarterback

San Diego Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers joined the show to talk about the upcoming season.

Dan asked Rivers how important throwing motion is when evaluating young quarterbacks. Rivers said it’s not the biggest factor.

“There’s a lot of guys who can stand out here and throw a 20-yard comeback wide side,” Rivers said. “They can do it better than I can.”

But Rivers said teams have to factor in leadership. “That’s the first role of a quarterback,” Rivers said. “Can he lead the guys around him?”

Rivers also talked about his trash talking. He said it really is as clean as advertised. He said he tries to target something specific about the player … like if he burns a former Alabama DB, he’ll walk by and say “Roll Tide.”

Rivers also talked about last season. He said that the Chargers’ stats were amazing the first half of last season, but they turned the ball over. That’s why they weren’t winning. Now not turning the ball over is a real focus for Rivers.
