Phil Simms says NFL is becoming ‘flag football’

CBS’ Phil Simms joined the show to talk about the big stories around the NFL.

Simms and Dan discussed the offensive fireworks this season. “What we got right now is flag football,” Simms said. “Hit him with two hands and they’re down. I didn’t come away from the Patriots-Chargers game and say, wow, that was awesome. Coaches are taking advantage of the rules.”

Simms said that Tom Brady is incredible, but he’ll be judged by the playoffs. “Sports is now judged by the playoffs,” Simms said.

Simms had some interesting comments on Cam Newton. He doesn’t think that Newton will ever be a great runner. But Simms likes his size and thinks he’ll be a very good downfield passer. He said the coaching staff is from San Diego, and the coaches like to throw vertically, which fits Newton perfectly.

Simms said the Colts do appear to be in big trouble. He’s not ready to say it’s over, but “there are lot of signs you don’t like.”
