Pat Haden comments on Yale QB and Rhodes scholarship, Penn State and Matt Barkley’s future

USC athletic director Pat Haden joined the show to talk about Yale quarterback Patrick Witt choosing between playing against Harvard and interviewing for the Rhodes scholarship. Haden himself was a star QB at USC and a Rhodes scholar.

Haden said he talked to Witt recently, and the Yale QB told him that he couldn’t let down his team. Haden understood that.

Haden also commented on the Penn State scandal. He said that he’s not sure something like that could happen at USC because it’s a big city and the press corps is on top of the program.

Dan asked Haden what advice he’ll give USC quarterback Matt Barkley.

“Really none,” Haden said. “I would feel horribly if I lobbied for him to come back and he did and he blew out a knee.”

Haden did have a lot of praise for Barkley. “We’d love him to come back,” Haden said. “He could do some amazing things and really be an icon. … Matt Barkley, who’s a lot more mature than I am, will make the right decision.

Dan asked Haden who he would take, Barkley or Andrew Luck. Haden said Barkley is 1A and Luck is 1B. But he’d like to take them both.
