Warriors play-by-play man looks back at Wilt’s 100-point night

Longtime Philadelphia sports broadcaster Bill Campbell joined the show to talk about calling Wilt’s 100-point night in Hershey, Pa., 50 years ago today. He was the Philadelphia Warriors broadcaster at the time.

Campbell said that with :46 seconds left, the 4,000 fans ran onto the court. Then they cleared them off and played it out.

Campbell said the shocking thing was that he was hitting his free throws. He was a less-than-50 percent shooter from the charity stripe, and that night he couldn’t miss.

Campbell said that he didn’t realize what was going on. He realized later that he didn’t tape the game. A fan caught a few minutes, and that was it.

Campbell said he thought several people would do 100, because they were adding a three-point shot and the 24-second clock.

Campbell said that at the time, there wasn’t much hype. “In those days, it wasn’t that big a deal,” Campbell said. “There was more fuss about this 50-year anniversary then there was that day.”
