Tim Layden says Bolt a bigger name around world than Phelps

Sports Illustrated’s Tim Layden joined guest host Glenn Ordway to talk about Usain Bolt’s dramatic 100m win and more.

Layden said that he didn’t expect to see Bolt win again like that. He said Bolt has always had the talent, but his career hit bumps because of injuries and his aversion to training hard.

Ordway asked Layden who was more famous, Michael Phelps or Bolt. Layden said Bolt is more famous internationally than Phelps.

“[Bolt] is an international celebrity in a way I don’t think Phelps is,” Layden said.

Layden said that he’s pretty sure Phelps is done, because Phelps almost retired after last Olympics. Layden said that he’ll have plenty of opportunities moving forward.

Layden actually picks Carl Lewis as the greatest Olympian, noting it’s easier to accumulate medals in swimming.
