Tom Verducci agrees with Nationals about shutting down Strasburg

Sports Illustrated’s Tom Verducci joined the show to talk about the Nationals’ decision to sit Stephen Strasburg.

Verducci thinks the Nationals are doing the right thing. “You just can’t ramp him up to 200 innings and expect him to stay healthy,” Verducci said. . You don’t want another Mark Prior.”

Verducci thinks general manager Mike Rizzo is behind this.  “I think it’s Mike Rizzo and it’s all about Mike Rizzo,” Verducci said. He noted Rizzo has studied the numbers back and forth on pitchers and Tommy John surgery.

Verducci thinks that Strasburg’s agent Scott Boras is probably for this too, because he knows the number on innings count and young pitchers.

Verducci does think the Nationals can win the World Series without Strasburg. But Verducci thinks they still need to get production from pitcher Jordan Zimmerman.

Verducci said if the Yankees don’t get into the playoffs, then they may blow up a big part of the team. “There’d be major changes,” Verducci said.
