Brian Kelly on Everett Golson, calls from the NFL, remaining independent
Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly joined the show to talk about this season and more.
Kelly talked about ineligible quarterback Everett Golson. Kelly said that he has shown he still wants to be a big part of the program and is working to be a better quarterback. “He’s working out in Chicago,” Kelly said. “He’s going to California to spend some time with George Whitfield, the quarterback coach.
Dan asked what’s happening in college that is spreading into the NFL on offense. “The quarterback being defended as a runner right now is something everyone is grappling with,” Kelly said. “That quarterback has already been seen in the college game, and now you’re starting to see it in the NFL.”
Kelly also talked about upping the tempo of the offense. He said you have to keep in mind that it limits the offense’s ability to make substitutes. Kelly said conditioning of your team is a big factor.
Dan asked Kelly if he came close to taking the Philadelphia Eagles job. “I don’t know that I was even going to be offered the Eagles job,” Kelly said. “I was interested in learning about the NFL. It was an opportunity to learn more. For me to turn down a job, I needed to learn about. … It was more intrigue than it was interest.”
Dan asked which is more likely — an eight-team playoff or Notre Dame joining a conference. Kelly said eight-team playoff — “no one asked me, but my opinion is an 8-team playoff is right around the corner.” Kelly said he likes the schedule now and they don’t need to join a conference.
