Jeff Fisher: Sam drafted for production on field

St. Louis Rams coach Jeff Fisher joined the show to talk about the decision to draft Michael Sam.

Fisher explained why they were interested in Sam: “In Michael’s case, it was the production on the field. He was the SEC co-Defensive Player of the Year. You can’t neglect his production. That’s why he’s a Ram.”

Dan asked if the NFL made any suggestions regarding Sam. “Absolutely not,” Fisher said. “We had no contact with the League office on any player whatsoever.”

Fisher also commented on rumors they were going to draft Johnny Manziel. “We worked Johnny out and felt Johnny was a good player,” Fisher said. “But we had a starting quarterback and thougth from a draft standpoint we’d be better off going in another direction.”

Fisher said he respects HBO’s Hard Knocks, but at this moment would probably prefer not to have cameras in practice.
