Andy Staples breaks down NCAA penalties for Penn State

Sports Illustrated’s Andy Staples joined the show to talk about the NCAA’s announcement on penalties for Penn State.

Staples said Penn State may not be as crushed as SMU was by their penalties. Staples said SMU missed the boat on going to the Big 12 because of sanctions and that’s why they didn’t recover. But Staples said it will take 10 years for Penn State to get back.

Staples doesn’t think the NCAA has jurisdiction. “If you open this, you open up a Pandora’s Box,” Staples said. Staples noted by other ways programs can get in trouble — like multiple arrests over a summer — and maybe that would now fall into what the NCAA rules on.

Staples said that one reason Penn State did not get the Death Penalty is that the football program helps support other sports.
