Jerry Markbreit rips NFL’s stance of officiating situation, says “shame” on replacements

Former NFL official Jerry Markbreit joined the show to clarify his comments about commissioner Roger Goodell.

Markbreit shared his view on the commissioner. “Every comment that the commissioner has made has reassured the fans that the game is in competent hands,” Markbreit said. “It just isn’t.”

Markbreit said that the officials have worked hard to make sure they’re not a significant part of the game. And now they’re a huge part of the story.

Markbreit said that “game administration” is the problem — the fights and bickering. Markbreit said that every time something complicated happens, they have to go upstairs. Markbreit also pointed out that these guys aren’t experts on the rules. Markbreit said it took him his whole career to become an expert on the rules.

“This breaks my heart to see this,” Markbreit said. “This is a profession that has so much dignity. For replacements to try to replace officals … it’s hard to stomach.”

Dan asked Markbreit what he would say to a replacment official. “Shame on them,” Markbreit said. “They’re going to be labeled as replacements/scabs the rest of their careers.”
