John Smoltz weighs in on MVP races, picks World Series teams

MLB Network’s John Smoltz joined the show to preview the playoffs and more.

Dan asked Smoltz if he likes the one-and-done wild card matchup. “I don’t,” Smoltz said. “But I think it’s going to be intriguing.” Smoltz said he thinks they’ll tweak it moving forward.

Smoltz weighed in on the MVP race in the National League and why he likes Ryan Braun. “Someone has to explain what it’s supposed to be,” Smoltz said. He thinks Braun had an incredible year without Prince Fielder in the lineup. Smoltz said that the way he could lose it is if voters value what Buster Posey can do at catcher.

“Purely statistical categories … [Braun] would win it,” Smoltz said.

Smoltz said that the Triple Crown should seal the MVP for Miguel Cabrera. He said it’s just the wrong year for Mike Trout and Fernando Rodney.

Smoltz picks the Giants and Tigers to reach the World Series.
